Musings on SocMed Use (2025 Edition)
this post is outdated from the date of publishing but I still wanted to post it. There are some small updates here and there.
It’s been more than six months since I resumed using socmed and I have certain thoughts about my use of specific platforms and the community at large in relation to my interests.
The contenders
This is how my socmed use looks at the moment. I use Mastodon for daily updates and some long form yapping, kind of like a free form draft. I have plenty of mutuals on the danmei side of fandom and have been unable to find fans of other series I would love to connect with people. As usual, a list.
- Sasaki and Miyano
- Hirano and Kagiura
- Inazuma Eleven
- Katekyo Hitman Reborn
- Ace Attorney
So from five out of six fandoms, I have not been able to find mutuals. Hmmm, wow that’s kind of a lot. I’ve been considering making another Intro toot for the new year to reintroduce myself and see if I can find mutuals on these fandoms.
Early 2026 Update: As of April 2026, I have not made that updated intro post.
I have also tried going to the tag and seeing how many folks and how often participate using the fandom tag. For IE and KHR, not many. Not sure if I tried the rest π€.
I guess if I really don’t find any mutuals after a new intro post, I will be considering something hmm…
Although if I’m being honest, whether or not I have mutuals on those fandoms doesn’t mean I want to microblog anywhere else. Let’s see how I feel about microblogging on other socmed.
Pillowfort
The PWA app… I don’t have it on my phone. My dashboard isn’t very active but I do enjoy spending time there. Might need to block a tag or two to make me more comfortable existing there.
About microblogging, this is the most likely place. KHR and IE fans are there, one or two. SasaMiya community hasn’t had activity in over a few years. Not sure about active fans on their own forts π€. On Ace Attorney, the community isn’t too active (compared to other sites) but it exists.
Dang, now that I think about it. There are more folks active on the fandoms I am active on at Pfio than Mastodon. But ughhh, microblog on Pfio? The idea isn’t attractive at all. Leaving the screen erases a draft post and a draft comment. I see other folks doing it but it feels like such a drag. Probably the same reason I didn’t like microblogging on Tumblr. I don’t like blogging platforms with microblogs without titles. I know that the folks I follow don’t shitpost so I don’t feel the same kind of ickyness when I see Tumblr microblogs but I feel like I should have a title. So far, those titles have been really silly, maybe clickbaity; I don’t know. I crossposted some threads from Mastodon to Pfio so I had to add titles for them. Oh and also the fic prompts. I don’t like titles on microblogs! I don’t like microblogs on blogging platforms! That’s why microblogging platforms exist, for microblogs argghhhh (οΌβΈα)(β―Β°ηΒ°)β―彑β»ββ»
I don’t even know who I am angry at.
Then, there’s the archival. If I start microblogging anywhere outside Mastodon, I will have another place to check to archive microblogs. That’s work I do not want.
Moreover, my intended use of Pfio is a place crossposting for microblogs and long form, somewhere in between Mastodon and Dreamwidth. So yes, I guess I am okay with my fort having microblogs but not Pfio-only microblogs.
I guess my intended use of these platforms is based on the structure of the content rather than the theme (ex. personal/art).
Early 2026 Update: While this new blog solves the microblog issue, I haven’t done any fandom posting yet. This blog can be downloaded and archived with ease. Another reason I’m hesitant about Pfio-only microblogs is that it’s closed sourced and there is no way to download my posts. I prioritize archival capabilities over accessibility.
Dreamwidth
My journal was the first platform I have dedicated to long form posts before hosting a blog on my website. It was intended to be used as a blog, nothing else.
DW is very good for long form, structured posts in my opinion. Tagging system is god-like and it’s so satisfying to maintain. In comparison, Pfio is… I don’t know how to explain it. Less intuitive? Less in your face? For me, that’s a negative. I need a pinned post on top of my account. The whole ADHD object permanence thing. I’ve been having trouble keeping up my tagging system because it takes too many clicks to access it. I’m probably not the first user to want pinned comments so I should check the plans and requests page π€. I’m not faulting Pfio for this design choice. It’s just that my brain would really benefit from having a top post or a series of them like in my other accounts.
Early 2026 Update: I refreshed my fort’s sidebar which solved the pinned comment/top post issue.
Same as Pfio, the idea of microblogging on DW is counterintuitive. Even if I already have a blog, I haven’t really considered microblogging there. I have considered using it more like a journal such as this. That’s an idea I am attracted to. Like an open journal of sorts. My journal is already a bit of a mixed bag of blog posts, community challenges, and archive posts. I think they are nicely organized despite the mess. But yeah, the Pfio tagging system leaves a lot of be desired in comparison (γ»γ» ) . Again, it’s not a negative, just the tools that would make it easier for me to organize my posts. But then I can’t see many people being defensive because it’s obviously not perfect. Anyways!
Early 2026 Update: I tried microblogging on DW and metadata input takes too long to be an optimal platform for me. Similar to Pfio, I believe there is no way to download an archive of posts but I may have missed that feature.
